Pedestrian Safety<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Aim: To conduct workers, management and visitors from Point A to Point B while avoiding random, unplanned encounters with forklifts, trucks, loaders, and any other machinery.<\/p>\n<p>How to keep them apart:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Signs \u2013 Pedestrians need to be shown clearly where they can and cannot be.<\/li>\n<li>Barriers. Painted lines on the floor are good. Physical\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dexsafe.com\/nz\/barrier-range\/\">barriers<\/a>\u00a0are better.<\/li>\n<li>Visibility \u2013 Pedestrian walkways should be highly visible and obvious to any machinery operators in the vicinity.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>No blind corners, no surprises. You can see through or over all our pedestrian barriers \u2013 even the tough Forksafe ones that can resist an\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dexsafe.com\/nz\/barrier-range\/forksafe\/\">attack by a forklift<\/a>!\u00a0\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?time_continue=4&amp;v=sqTw_s41wkc&amp;feature=emb_logo\">[Watch PedSafe Video here]<\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?time_continue=4&amp;v=sqTw_s41wkc&amp;feature=emb_logo\"><br \/>\n<\/a><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Gates. Designated crossing points should be guarded by a gate. The act of opening a gate gives pause before crossing. It\u2019s easy to add a self-locking gate as part of our\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dexsafe.com\/nz\/barrier-range\/pedsafe\/\">Pedsafe<\/a>\u00a0pedestrian barrier system.<\/li>\n<li>Signs and warning devices (flashing lights) should mark out potential hazards.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>2. Pedestrians working around powered mobile plant (trucks, vans, load-shifting machinery)<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Delivery and pickup of goods, loading and unloading of equipment and merchandise all present hazardous situations.<\/p>\n<p>Worksafe NZ suggests:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>One-way systems<\/li>\n<li>Mirrors on blind spots<\/li>\n<li>Separate entrances for people and plant<\/li>\n<li>Speed management using bumps or signage<\/li>\n<li>Specially marked reversing or turn-around areas.<\/li>\n<li>Designated loading\/unloading areas<\/li>\n<li>Clearly identify and delineate mobile plant exclusion zones<\/li>\n<li>Identify designated areas to board or alight from plant to prevent people from entering exclusion zones<\/li>\n<li>Provide a designated safe area for drivers (while loading and unloading)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/worksafe.govt.nz\/assets\/Topic\/traffic-management-workplace-designated-driver.jpg\" alt=\"Diagram of no-man\u2019s land for truck drivers\" \/><\/p>\n<h1>Human error \u2013 responsible for up to 90% of workplace accidents<\/h1>\n<p>So, how do we make an \u2018enforced exclusion zone\u2019?<\/p>\n<p>To use an aviation term, if a worker is suffering from \u2018lack of situational awareness\u2019, i.e. \u2018he\u2019s spaced out\u2019, due to physical or mental stress or maybe just dreaming about the beach, he might ignore all signs and warnings. Or even his safety training.<\/p>\n<p>At this point only a barrier would keep him safe. However, it doesn\u2019t always work to install permanent barriers \u2013 sometimes you need the space to be open. That\u2019s when we suggest\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dexsafe.com\/nz\/barrier-range\/spansafe\/\">expandable barriers<\/a>.
