With 75 workplace fatalities in NZ for 2019, it\u2019s time to identify workplace hazards and minimise their risks. While the definition of hazard is \u2019a danger or something that can cause damage\u2019, \u2018risk\u2019 refers to the likelihood of a specific effect within a specified period. For example, a corrosive chemical is a\u00a0hazard<\/b>, but the storage\u00a0risks<\/b>\u00a0can be decreased by following the right procedures.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

The 3 main steps are:<\/i><\/p>\n

Step 1: Identify the Hazards<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Using WorkSafe New Zealand\u2019s data on work-related fatalities for 2019 helps to determine some of the main workplace hazards. These numbers do not include members of the public who died as a result of someone else\u2019s work activity, or deaths from occupational disease.<\/p>\n

The following list cites 77 accident types. That\u2019s because some incidents involved more than one hazard.<\/p>\n

1<\/strong>. Vehicle incidents accounted for 33 of these deaths.\u00a0 The following fatalities were also recorded:<\/p>\n

2.<\/strong>\u00a06 falls from height<\/p>\n

3.<\/strong>\u00a06 falls on the same level.<\/p>\n

4.<\/strong>\u00a05 people died from falling objects.<\/p>\n

5.<\/strong>\u00a04 deaths were \u2018Unspecified\u2019<\/p>\n

6.<\/strong>\u00a03 people were trapped between moving and stationary objects<\/p>\n

7.<\/strong>\u00a03 were hit by moving objects<\/p>\n

8.<\/strong>\u00a03 people died from contact with electricity<\/p>\n

9.<\/strong>\u00a03 from \u2018Transport\u2019<\/p>\n

10.<\/strong>\u00a02 fatalities were attributed to \u2018Single contact with chemical\u2019<\/p>\n

11.<\/strong>\u00a02 deaths from mobile plant roll-over<\/p>\n

12.<\/strong>\u00a02 from being bitten or hit by an animal<\/p>\n

13.<\/strong>\u00a02 were classed as \u2018environment\u2019<\/p>\n

14.<\/strong>\u00a01 explosion<\/p>\n

15.<\/strong>\u00a01 drowning<\/p>\n

16.<\/strong>\u00a01 trapped in moving machinery or equipment<\/p>\n

Step 2: Do a job hazard and risk analysis<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Scrutinise your plant or warehouse for hazards. Assess all processes from receiving, through manufacturing, order-picking and maintenance to shipping.<\/p>\n
